While rowing through college, I spent my time off the water studying graphic design, and managing a small local screen printing shop. I got my start making Rowing Apparel, designing my own collegiate teams gear. Getting those first shirts back was euphoric, I was hooked. Striving on being self-taught, and finding the perfect combination of my passions (rowing, design, and tshirts), I decided to take a stab at it on my own, and the project was born . From taking scrap wood, and building my first printing press...to going to our first regatta with just 50 shirts, our long journey began. Known as Maeke Apparel at the time, years of hard work, name mispronunciation, and countless regattas later, we've made the decision to separate the brand from the rest of the print shop, and continue on as Free Speed.

Sister, design consultant, additional pair of hands, Melinda was there for the birth of the company, and frequently joins us on the road. Taking all the stress out of everything from production, to honestly answering "does this look good?" Melinda has final say on which products go to production, is a senior to our staff, a senior in highschool, and knows the company better than even I do sometimes.
